MacBook 2008 Ponderings
Yes, we’ve all heard: the Apple event announcing several new laptop product refreshes is now over: skim the video of the 2008 MacBook announcements here.
Here is a nice roundup of all computers at Gizmodo.
Apple vs. Dell
The whole point to my following these developments was to research replacing my aging Dell laptop with a more suitable alternative that actually works when I need it.
Similarly outfitted laptops yield similar price points:
Apple MacBook Pro vs. Dell XPS M1530
- 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 4GB RAM (Mac=DDR3, PC=DDR2)
- 320GB Hard Drive @ 7200 RPM
- DVD/CD-RW Drive
- Wireless 802.11n
- Bluetooth 2 +EDR
- 3 Year Warranty/Tech Support
The Mac came to a total of $3189, the Dell came to a total of $2944 (after adding back in a $535 off promotion).
Of course this doesn’t take into account Apple’s better graphics card, display quality, weight, or battery life. And it doesn’t take into account the difference in operating systems, and the fact that my old Dell laptop (and subsequently Windows) is breaking all the time.
For now I’ll see how others like the new MacBook Pro and wait for the right opportunity (read: new job) to pick one up.
