Why LAPD Stopped me From Taking Public Photos

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on Jan 16, 2009 in photography, tools, videos

I was out last evening experimenting with some night photography, such as star trails and traffic trails.  If anyone is familiar with the Santa Monica/West Los Angeles media district–or even if you aren’t–it’s full of older industrial factories from the turn of the last century.  These are all converted now into production and post production companies, often rented cheaper and labeled as “creative space.”  At any rate, it’s a great space to experiment with.

At around 8:30pm a police car drives slowly past me, and just past the intersection, they flipped around and pulled up the curb where I stood with my camera mounted on a tripod.  I wasn’t sure what I had done wrong, but the enormous spotlight directed at me sure seemed unnecessary.  The woman sidekick cop just kept saying “this doesn’t look good.” Thanks, how reassuring…

JPG Magazine Will Survive After All

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on Jan 12, 2009 in photography

A week ago I wrote about how JPG Magazine was on the verge of folding–I think due in part to their mandatory print subscription which comes with membership.

At 4:30 this morning, I received an email from their publisher, 8020 Media, stating that they are in fact going to survive thanks to a huge amount of community outpouring.  Of course news coverage like those here and here don’t hurt either.  They are settling on a buyer next week.  Exciting news!

This is a great time to remind any photographers out there to take a look and consider contributing to JPG Magazine.  There are some fantastic artists showing their work, and you should join them.

Is JPG Magazine Folding?

JPG Magazine may be shutting down immediately.  Founded on an extraordinarily active community, the magazine uses crowdsourcing to gather content for its semi-monthly published paper issues.  Sure, traditional publishing may be slowly grinding to a halt, but the hybrid publishing model is so innovative!

Perhaps they should created muli-tiered memberhips and leave the revenue-sucking physical magazine strictly optional.

You can download back issues in PDF form before the site goes down on Monday 1/5.

18 Years and 6,000 Photos Later

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on Dec 31, 2008 in photography

I stumbled upon this puzzled account of a discovery that someone had documented their life by taking one Polaroid photo a day–from March 31, 1979 until his death on October 25, 1997.  Little other information is initially given by the original website featuring the work except that the author/photographer is Jamie Livingston.  Here is coverage from the New York Times, and this post also explains more about the project.

View the Jamie Livingston project in entirety here.

Timothy Ferriss on How to Promote Your Product (Or Yourself)

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on Oct 24, 2008 in distribution, marketing

If you haven’t read The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, then stop now and read it.  It will change the way you do business and approach your own time management, among many other benefits.  It has helped me correct many productivity-sucking habits that formed seemingly on their own.

Too many to explore in one blog post (that’s why you read the whole book), writetodone recently posted an interview with the creator of this concept, Timothy Ferriss.  Speaking about just a taste of his lifestyle design “guides,” although they apply to more traditional publishing there, they can be applied to any product–or yourself–that you’d like to promote.  His viral/social marketing approach is equally applicable to those promoting their own work like photography and filmmaking, but also to anyone needing a career refreshment.

Canon EOS 50D Announced

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on Aug 25, 2008 in photography

Canon has just announced the successor to the EOS 40D: the new EOS 50D, named appropriately of course.

Now the sensor weighs in at a hefty 15.1 megapixels and claims to have the same processing speed as the previous model because of the updated Digic 4 sensor.

I’ve been using the Canon EOS 30D for the past couple years and love it.  But at 8.1 megapixels, the resolution is not quite high enough to successfully submit the image to a site like iStockPhoto or print them large enough to occupy some more serious wall space.  The 40D powered 10.1 megapixels, and the new 50D is ever more tempting.

The camera is due out in early October.  Catch the details on the official product site here.  Here’s hoping for an upcoming project to pay this one off…

Transform Your Photos and Videos With a Film Aesthetic

Posted by Kyle Wiebalk on May 24, 2007 in photography, tutorials

I came across this tutorial to turn an ordinary image into one with a more traditional film aesthetic. Although it uses Photoshop with still photos, I bet you can use the same concepts and filter adjustments to apply the same aesthetic to a video within your favorite video editor.
